The holiday weekend swept through Chilmark as it always does, with lots of chores still to do and the first wave of visitors here hoping for fun in the sun. The weather tried to please everyone but there was a lot of fog on occasion. Everyone seemed happy to be here and that is what makes it a holiday weekend. The parades and speeches helped to focus on the meaning of the weekend and that was good.

Chilmark has endured another long week of poor weather. As I write on Wednesday, though, the sun is out and the smiles are everywhere. It seems that this pattern will continue through our Memorial Day weekend and that will be very nice for all.

This Saturday the Chilmark Community Church will offer a Yard and Plant Sale at the Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be household goods for sale and, for the first time, they will offer lobster rolls to go.

Chilmark will have many choices of eating places this week. The air should be full of the good smells of food! The Galley opened yesterday for the season; the Bite will open today at 11 a.m.; the Tavern will open May 23 and the Home Port will open on May 25. The Menemsha Fish Market, Larsen’s Fish Market and the Menemsha Café are all already going strong.

Chilmark has seen the last of January. Actually she treated us better than many other places in New England. As I write midweek, the ground is clear and very little snow remains. The rains were hard for awhile this week and more welcome than snow. What’s next is anybody’s guess.

Chilmark will not be Disney East this time I am so proud to be a part of this town. The zoning board members concurred that their building inspector had made the right decision in granting permits to two working farms for wind turbines. It is a time of change for all of us and this small agricultural and fishing community is fortunate to have citizens that are willing to be bold in trying new ways to survive and succeed in the future.

Chilmark looks like Dubai this week . . . great tall building cranes everywhere you look. Actually, there are three of them and they were all working at the same time some days this week. One is working for the town of Chilmark, rebuilding the way out to the fill dock; one is working for the U.S. Coast Guard on their dock and the third is working for a private home owner replacing a dock. I suspect manning the cranes has been a challenge with the strong winds that hung around Chilmark all week.

Chilmark is snowless as I write midweek. We are eyeing the next storm coming along and hoping it also brings us rain.

Chilmarkers know how to throw a good party. On Wednesday, the ladies of the Women’s Symposium group joined the members of the Friends of the Chilmark Library to share their culinary and party making talents and create a wonderful birthday party for Rhoda Diamond, who celebrated a significant day! She was genuinely surprised and enjoyed the moment. Cheers from us all, Rhoda, and best wishes for a grand year!
