The company that moved the Gay Head Light last year has outlined a major two-phase restoration project for the historic lighthouse, at a cost of about $1.3 million — more than triple the amount budgeted.

With the Gay Head Light having completed its historic move last year, and long-term planning underway for Aquinnah Circle, shop owners have a new vision for their town’s commercial and cultural district.

Since installing the Island’s first underwater herring cam, scientists have had a fish’s-eye view of herring, otters, cormorants and other species making their way through a historic herring run in Aquinnah.

With the Aquinnah Shop the only restaurant open at the cliffs this fall and at least two shops shuttered this summer, town leaders and shop owners are discussing the next steps. Lots at the Circle are traditionally leased only to tribal members.

With the Gay Head Light relocation project under way and temporary parking rules in place at Aquinnah Circle, shop owners at the cliffs are hoping to weather the changes and eventually to benefit from the publicity surrounding the move.
