While everyone’s story is of value it sure would have been nice to see my dad on this list. My dad, Sherman F Burnham, a born and raised native Islander who enjoyed the best of the island and made many quiet contributions over his 88 years of life. He spent his early life out on the Great Plains, running in the fields, grabbing herring out of the Herring Creek or sneaking over to watch the soldiers at the airfield during WW2. He raised a family and became a partner in one of the most prominent building companies on island. He built or worked on houses on island for over half a century. In the end I suppose it’s okay. He would have been embarrassed by the attention anyway.

I agree. Every year this tribute misses too many loved ones. It shouldn't be a competition at this point.

The list is people the writer knew, or knew about. Of course not every person who died is listed here! Having named your two, they are now part of the list. I don't think it was necessary to point fingers. I'm very sorry for your loss.

I read the article slowly and all of the comments. My condolences to everyone who lost someone this past year. All of our combined grace makes Martha's Vineyard what it is. Lee Fierro will always have a place in my heart, as do you all. Known and unknown; if we love the "rock', we love each other.
