Edgartown firefighters responded Wednesday morning to a smoky, stubborn house fire at 38 Pinehurst Road. Smoke drifted out of roof vents and open windows for about a half hour, as firefighters searched for the source.

At first firefighters thought the fire might have been sparked by overloaded electrical power strips, but are leaning instead toward improper disposal of smoking materials as the cause.

“We saw an abundance of cigarette butts on the floor, either spilled or dropped on the floor,” said fire chief Peter Shemeth. Firefighters found some fabric, possibly a pillow that had smoldered.

The lingering smoke made it difficult to determine whether there was still a danger of fire spreading.

Deputy fire chief Alex Schaeffer said there was relatively little damage to the structure.

“It’s just smoke damage throughout the house,” he said.

The ranch style home built in 1950 is owned by Louise J. Bernard, according to town records.
