Publicizing of the Martha’s Vineyard striped bass derby was taken up by the Salt Water Sportsman, a weekly publication devoted exclusively to salt water sport fishing. A four page announcement had been printed and distributed by the Sportsman, in which the derby was characterized as “the most colossal fishing derby ever staged on the North Atlantic.”
The judges of the derby, as now announced, are: Henry Moore, Boston Herald-Traveler; Tap Goodenough, Record-American; Paul Provandie, Boston Globe; Cliff Davis, Boston Post; and Hal Lyman, editor of the Salt Water Sportsman.
Further additions have been made to the list of prizes, topped by a cash prize of $1,000, and many reels, rods, and articles of sports wear and gear are included. Fourteen classes are now planned, with first, second, and third prizes in each class, and a number of additional prizes.
M. Martin Gouldey, chairman of the derby committee, expressed his gratification with the aid being given, and the manner in which plans are developed.
