In June 1965, conservationists concerned about development on the Lobsterville moors sent out letters to residents asking them to join the fight “to preserve the natural beauty of Martha’s Vineyard.” Fifty years later, the Vineyard Conservation Society endures, its mission unchanged.

The Vineyard Conservation Society is gathering final approvals for a conservation restriction in Chilmark more than 20 years in the making.

Cold winds deterred some but not all as VCS led a guided walk at the Gay Head Cliffs on Saturday. The location was significant as VCS celebrates it’s 50th anniversary this year, and was instrumental in creating national landmark status for the cliffs in 1965.

As part of its upcoming fiftieth anniversary, the Vineyard Conservation Society begins its winter walks series on Saturday afternoon this weekend with a walk back in time — to the Gay Head Cliffs.
