One score plus one year ago, to wit, July 4, 1946, Borrowdale, “the smallest bookshop in the world,” opened its doors to the public in Edgartown. It was then, and is still today, the only shop on the Vineyard devoted solely to the purveyance of literature without resort to the lure of coupons or kickapoo juice or the like. Established by the late Gerald and Margaret Chittenden shortly before his retirement from the faculty of St. Paul’s School, Concord, N.H., Borrowdale quickly became known as the place you could purchase good books immediately, and order the other kind.

Sale of the Metropolitan Hotel property, Oak Bluffs, which was largely destroyed by fire some weeks ago, was announced on Tuesday by Rodney D. Marks, former owner, who said that the property has been purchased by Krikor (Jerry) Barmakian, former restaurant proprietor, also of Oak Bluffs. Mr. Barmakian left the Island on Tuesday morning, to be gone for several days, and thus cou1d not be located, but Mr.

The Mansion House, Vineyard Haven, has been sold to George H. Heeley of Providence, R. I., through the real estate office of Henry V. Sanders of New Bedford.

 

A national bank building, which, so far as its architectural design goes, is unique among banks, is that just opened in Vineyard Haven as the home of the Martha’s Vineyard National Bank. This institution, started in Edgartown 50 years ago, has enjoyed a prosperous existence up to the present time.
