Aquinnah Says Yes to Landfill Solar Panels

After nearly two hours of debate at a special town meeting Wednesday night, Aquinnah residents voted to allow Vineyard Power to install 200 solar panels at the town landfill. The one article-warrant passed 29-13.

The 60,000 kilowatt system will power all of the town buildings and street lights.

Aquinnah Special Town Meeting Tonight

Excursion Rates Set to Expire

Steamship Authority excursion privileges issued to approximately half of all profile numbers will expire on Dec. 31. Island residents with profile numbers ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 ) must renew their excursion registration in order to continue receiving discounted auto rates and preferred booking.

Farms Story Hour Sprouts at Morning Glory

Moo or oink or cock-a-doodle-doo if you love story hour and farms, because Morning Glory Farm is set to host a preschool story hour every Tuesday in December beginning at 11 a.m.

The stories take place in the farmstand loft and feature farm inspired stories and songs. Imagine that, parents do the boring shopping routine, although not really boring with all the fresh veggies at the stand, and kids get to get cozy in the loft, playing Heidi.

Funeral services will be held for Barbara (Francis) Silvia on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.

The longtime treasurer for the Red Stocking Fund and Vineyard Haven resident died on Dec. 2 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was 68 and was well-known and well-loved on the Vineyard for her community service work.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home

Another Way To Go Green

Celebrate all things kale at a festival in its honor taking place at Mermaid Farm on Middle Road in Chilmark.

The event takes place Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature kale cooking demonstrations, kale tastings, a potluck brunch, a kale cook-off and farm tours. No word yet on whether it’s time to break out the kale hats and mittens.

Island Community Chorus in Holiday Concert

The Island Community Chorus sounded its first note back in 1996. Today, under the direction of Peter Boak, it’s a veritable Island institution. Anyone can join, and no auditions are required. But that’s not to say the choir lacks talent.

The Island is filled with marvelous singers; they lurk behind bank teller windows, serve fried fish sandwiches all summer long, bag your groceries, plant your flowers, say hello (in tune) at the post office, ferry line, and from porches galore.

Circus Cinema Resumes on Saturday

The folks at Cinema Circus are gearing up for their first winter screening to be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center.

The event includes food, activities and, of course, a series of short films. And just as during the summer an early screening of the films is arranged with a young Island cineaste to give the real deal, kid’s-point-of-view on what's good, great and not so much.

The Martha’s Vineyard weekly Al-Anon meeting is moving its location to the medical staff library, above the kitchen, at the hospital. The group holds meetings every Sunday, from 9 to 10 a.m.

The change in location is effective immediately.

After Long Careet, Coast Guard Veteran Sales Back to Mainland

Paul Sullivan’s last day in the Coast Guard and last day at Menemsha Coast Guard Station coincided on Wednesday. Mr. Sullivan, who had spent 22 years in the Coast Guard, and two years in Menemsha, departed with subdued fanfare at about 9 a.m. He took his car and headed home to his family, South of Boston.
