The search for a new principal at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School is well under way, superintendent of schools Dr. James H. Weiss said Monday.
A separate search has also begun for Mr. Weiss’s replacement when he retires in 2015.
Vineyard schools superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash is eyeing another job in Virginia this weekend as one of three finalists for the position of superintendent of schools in Charlottesville.
Two months after a district court judge ordered a culinary arts teacher at the regional high school to pay back $20,000 he allegedly stole from the school, the Vineyard schools superintendent says he doubts aspects of the police investigation, including estimates of the money involved.
Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash says he is convinced the teacher, Peter Koines, is actually paying back more money than he took.
The All-Island School Committee voted without dissent this week to hire Edgartown School principal Edward Jerome as interim superintendent of the public schools.
Recommended last week by the cabinet of Island principals and assistant principals, the 90-day appointment of Mr. Jerome was approved Wednesday by the school board. The appointment is effective tomorrow, one day after Vineyard schools superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash officially steps down.
Three Superintendent Candidates Vie for Helm of Island Schools

After five months of searching and two different interims, the
Vineyard may have its new permanent superintendent of schools named next
week.
The all-Island school committee began a series of interviews with
three finalists on Wednesday, and will meet with the last superintendent
candidate on Monday.
In a sharply split vote that came after nearly two hours of polling
among board members, the All-Island School Committee last night selected
James H. Weiss as the next superintendent of Vineyard public schools.
Mr. Weiss, who has been superintendent of the Sanborn regional
school system in New Hampshire for the last seven years, is expected to
take over leadership of the Island's six public schools on July 1,
replacing Vineyard interim superintendent G. Paul Dulac.
