Tennis, Track Teams Undefeated; Sailing Squad Has Wind at Back

Home sports action picks up after April vacation on Monday with boys’ lacrosse taking on Dartmouth at 3 p.m. On Tuesday girls’ lacrosse hosts league opponent Coyle and Cassidy at 3 p.m., and sailing takes on Barnstable at the Sailing Camp Park at 3 p.m.

Spring Sports Preview

Bats are cracking, sails are full of wind and tennis racquets and lacrosse sticks are in evidence as the spring sports season gets under way at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Girls’ tennis opens Tuesday at 3 p.m. when the team takes on Barnstable. Also on Tuesday at 3 p.m., boys’ lacrosse hosts Bishop Stang.

Entry Deadline for Moffett Race is Friday

The deadline for entry into this year’s 35th annual George Moffett Memorial Race is approaching. Friday, Aug. 31, is the last day for entry forms to be mailed to the Holmes Hole Sailing Association.

While the race is still more than a week away, organizers of the event need to do their handicap work in preparation for the race on Saturday, Sept. 8. Last year there were 40 boats participating in the race.

It was a warm, hazy evening with a fresh southwest wind of 10 to 15 knots. Ten boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside of the Vineyard Haven breakwater.

Holmes Hole Sailors Compete in Thursday Night, Sunday Races

The Holmes Hole Sailing Association continued its summer season of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven harbor with a Thursday night race on July 3 and two harbor races on July 6. 

Thursday night was overcast with the threat of rain, and a 10-knot southwest wind. Six boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside of the Vineyard Haven harbor breakwater.

Finishing first was Bob Jewett in his Soling, Andiamo II. In second was Dan Culkin in the Vineyard Vixen, Magic Time. In third was Jerry Goodale in the Pearson 31, Stormalong.

Holmes Hole Sailors Embark On Summer Season of Races

The Holmes Hole Sailing Association has launched its series of handicap sailboat races from Vineyard Haven harbor.

On Sunday, the association held its Robinson’s Hole Rendezvous Race. Robinson’s Hole is a passage from Vineyard Sound to Buzzards Bay at the west end of Naushon Island.

It was a mostly sunny morning with a brisk southwest wind filling in for the 10 a.m. start outside of the Vineyard Harbor breakwater. Six boats posted for the start.
