Vineyard Teams Bested in Close Contests

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ hockey team suffered two of its toughest losses of the season this week, losing 3-2 in the closing minutes Friday to old rival Han-over, and then losing 4-1 to a top Division I team from Framingham at home Saturday.

Coach Matt Mincone said his team actually played better in the more lopsided 4-0 loss to Framingham than they did against Hanover the night before.

The coach said the Vineyarders played flat and uninspired hockey against Hanover in a game they easily could have won.

It was a jam-packed week in Vineyard sports, with high school teams playing a full slate of games, two charitable golf tournaments and the annual bike ride to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis. And recreational and youth teams — including youth lacrosse and little league — have entered the stretch run of their seasons.

High School Tennis Falls to Third Seed Dover-Sherborn After a Solid Season

The regional high school boys’ tennis team fought valiantly on Wednesday in the second round of the Division 3 state tournament against number three seed Dover-Sherborn, but in the end fell to the defending South Sectional champions 4-1.

Despite the loss the Vineyard boys had a remarkable season, going 15-5 overall and advancing to the semifinals of the state tournament for the first time. Dover-Sherborn improved to 16-1 with the win.

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ hockey team bounced back from a rough mid-season stretch to win big against Cambridge Rindge and Latin at home on Saturday, scoring five goals in the second period en route to an easy 8-0 win.

School bullies are moving out of the schoolyard and into cyberspace, making the job of monitoring and curbing abuse more difficult for educators such as Neal Weaver, assistant principal at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.

“You can’t just see a fight in the playground and break it up anymore,” said Mr. Weaver, who handles discipline for the 770 students of the school with the help of fellow assistant principal Carlin Hart.
