The undersigned would respectively give notice that he has opened the large and commodious house, known as the Marcy House, at Edgartown. This house is very pleasantly situated in the central part of town, two minutes walk from the steamboat landing - commanding a fine view of the harbor and surrounding scenery. Persons travelling on business, or for pleasure, will find this house a comfortable and quiet resort.
The former Vineyard House, which is to be reopened this summer as “The Sea View,” is beginning to present a fine appearance in its new coats of white paint. Mr. Kelley is doing an immense amount of work to the interior and exterior of this once famous hostelry, and when opened in June the house will be all that made it so popular in years gone.
Landlord Kelley is putting the Sea View House in prime order for the summer’s business, and the house has been completely renovated from lower to upper floors, and new improvements added. Mr. and Mrs. Kelley have earned for this hotel an enviable reputation for the first-class comfort to all guests.
Robert J. Carroll and former state Sen. Allen F. Jones, co-owners and stock holders of the Harbor View Hotel have signed an agreement to purchase Edgartown’s 200-year old Great Harbour Inn on Kelley street from Richard I. Colter. According to Mr. Carrol, their plans are to open the inn on a year-round basis “with deluxe accommodations and a dining room.”
“We think there’s a market for people who might want to live in a centrally located hotel year-round and have things done for them,” Mr. Carroll said.
Transfer of the equity in the historic Kelley House, Edgartown, to Richard L. Colter, proprietor of the Mansion House, Vineyard Haven, was made this week, a change of ownership that still retains the ancient inn in the family of its beloved proprietor, Mrs. E. A. Kelley, who conducted the house for years after the death of her husband, William Kelley, famed in his day as a host.
Robert J. Carroll, a prominent Edgartown businessman, has sold all of his interest in the Kelley House and the Harbor View Hotel to Robert Welch and Stephen C. Jones of Iyanough Management in Hyannis. Stephen C. Jones is an attorney and the son of former state Sen. Allan F. Jones of Hyannis, who is also a partner in the Kelley House and the Harbor View and owns Gull Airline and Will’s Air. Robert Welch is responsible for running seven hotels owned by Allan Jones.
At night the side streets of Edgartown go dark and quiet. But just a few blocks away on Main street, the beat of late night dining and dancing has reinvigorated the town.
Four new flat screen televisions hanging in the lobby of the Kelley House showcase Vineyard photography. The Vineyard’s first digital photo gallery features 11 photographers with strong Vineyard ties. Some 200 photos are featured, approximately 20 from each photographer.
