Louisa Gould Opens Show: Art Association Collection

Louisa Gould Gallery announces a new show, The Permanent Collection of the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association, opening Saturday, Nov. 8, with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m.

Three Island Photographers Featured in New Calendar

Several Vineyard photographers have had their work published in a new 2009 calendar from the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture. A full-page photograph of Marle the alpaca from Tisbury photographer Heather Welch graces the January page and Oak Bluffs resident Julian Robinson’s photograph of the agricultural fair horse show marks the month of July. Ms. Welch and Kelley DeBettencourt of Edgartown also have had smaller photographs published in the calendar as honorable mention winners.

The Martha’s Vineyard Art Association will be showing selected works from their permanent collection.

These works can be viewed through Oct. 31 at the Chilmark Bank and from Oct. 20 to Nov. 20 at the Louisa Gould Gallery in Vineyard Haven. There will be a reception at the gallery on Saturday, Nov. 8.

This exhibition will funded in part by a grant from the Martha’s Vineyard Local Cultural Council.

Hob-Knobbing as an Art: Inn Launches Fall Series

On Friday, Oct. 24, The Hob Knob, located at 128 Main street in Edgartown will host a cocktail reception to introduce a new cultural series called the Art of Hob Knobbing. Produced by Hob Knob proprietor Maggie White, the series is meant to feature some of the Island’s exemplary culinary, literary and artistic acheivements throughout the year.

Picturing What We Believe: Featherstone Opens Show

Jeanne Campbell — photographer, advisory board member of Featherstone Center for the Arts, and ardent supporter of the This I Believe series popularized by NPR’s Jay Allison — has invited artists to submit their own interpretations of This I Believe for an exhibition at the Oak Bluffs gallery.

All are invited to the opening reception on Sunday, Oct. 19, from 4 to 6 p.m. The show continues through Nov. 5.

“The challenge,” says Mrs. Campbell, “is trying to translate the belief into a visual form.”

Up-Island Pottery Studio Opens to All on Sunday

Up-Island potter Candy Shweder is opening her studio on Sunday, Oct. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be pottery demonstrations, wine, cheese and huge reductions on discontinued patterns and items. Candy Shweder studied ceramics in Chicago and California. She has been selling since 1986. She sold her work at the Chilmark Flea Market for 20 years and has been doing the Vineyard Artisans shows for 11 years.

Chicken Lady Lives, at Treehouse Studios

Viva Nancy Luce! is the theme of a new show opening Sunday, Oct. 12, at Treehouse Studios in West Tisbury, with a reception from 1 to 4 p.m. The exhibit will feature works of art related to the life of Martha’s Vineyard’s eccentric folk hero who became known in the 1800s as the chicken lady.

Pequot Hotel Art Exhibit in Memory of Betty Boyd

This year’s ninth annual art exhibition at the Pequot Hotel will be held from tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 4 through next Sunday, Oct. 12. The opening reception will be tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m. Ten per cent of all sales will be donated to the Oak Bluffs library in memory of artist Betty Boyd who died last winter.

Varied Exhibition at Carol Craven Gallery

The Carol Craven Gallery has hung its latest exhibition, featuring artwork by gallery artists J. Christian Snedeker, Nancy Furino, Rita Stern, Roger Phillips, Claire Chalfoun, Ann Grandin, John Evans, Gretchen Feldman and others.

There is a selection of American Modernist works by Benton, Gropper, Curry, Grosz and Lawrence, as well as paintings by South African artists Beezy Bailey and Usen Obot. Also featured is a major pastel by renowned artist David Hollowell, and a marvelous print by Faith Ringgold.

Featherstone Shows Works by Ann Howes

A retrospective exhibition of watercolor works by well-traveled West Tisbury artist Ann Howes opens tomorrow at Featherstone Center for the Arts, including pieces from her past painting trips abroad, across the United States and the Island. í
