Carol Barsha, Truly

Last Friday, the Gazette highlighted the opening of an art show by Carol Barsha at the Chilmark Library. Ms. Barsha’s exhibit is entitled Twenty Years at Beetlebung Farm and features paintings that chronicle two decades spent looking at and recreating on canvas the extended life of the farm.

The Gazette regrets that it posted in error that the opening would take place on July 23, when in fact the opening is this Saturday, July 30, from 3 to 5 p.m.

The exhibit runs through August 12.

Carolyn Daniele Art Show

On Thursday, July 28, artist Carolyn Daniele is having her first solo exhibition at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs. Ms. Daniele began her career as a ceramic sculptor but over the years has begun to incorporate painting and collage in her work.

Tomorrow night, Saturday, July 23, the Louisa Gould Gallery is hosting an artists’ reception from 5 to 7 p.m. entitled Vineyard Reflections. The event celebrates the work of Joan Kennedy, Kate Huntington, Anthony Benton Gude and Kathryn Wronski and includes works that reflect each artist’s interpretation of the Island in their own medium.

Artist Stephanie Danforth, one of the featured artists at this Sunday’s reception at the Field Gallery in West Tisbury, has an intriguing resume for an artist. For 20 years she worked as a pediatric nurse. She holds degrees in psychology and nursing and a master’s degree in maternal-child health.

The Chilmark Library is presenting an exhibition of paintings by Carol Barsha. There will be an opening reception held on Saturday, July 23 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Ms. Barsha’s exhibit is called Twenty Years at Beetlebung Farm. Her work chronicles her time spent painting at the farm for a few weeks every summer from 1998 to 2008.

Ms. Barsha’s primary medium is oils. Her attention, while at Beetlebung Farm, was turned toward its “fields and gardens, specifically, rows of plants and flowers and the fences that contain them.”

It’s a 3-D world, and Vineyard artists are hip to that.

At artist Jeanne Staples’s upcoming exhibition at the Granary Gallery you will see Crick Hill at Menemsha, just as lovely as you know her work to be, but in addition to landscapes of Martha’s Vineyard, Staples may surprise you with some installation pieces, including a thrilling third dimension.

Look out for Eat Beets for Health and The Vodou King, a life-size double portrait of Haitian artist Wilfred Dantis. In these pieces, Ms. Staples explores her more modernist interests.

Each week of late there has been a gallery stroll at one of the down-Island towns. Excellent. Plenty of opportunity for an artist date, as Julie Cameron calls it in her book The Artist’s Way. The idea being that if you take the time out of your busy lives to experience art your own creativity will blossom.

The art is for sale, too, so if truly inspired bring the work home with you.

The sight of an old barn, a beacon of red in the midst of a green and yellow field, not unlike that of a lighthouse, often brings up visions of the past, and a more idyllic time when cows owned the earth and people, well, just milked them.

Artist Richard Dunbrack sees furniture.

Using recycled materials from old barns and antique oddities that have fallen from grace (he does not pillage), Mr. Dunbrack fashions whimsical yet functional furniture. Art you can take a nap in, if you will.

Santa Fe sculptor Kevin Box and his wife and business partner, Jennifer Cady Box, will be on hand to greet visitors at the Dragonfly Fine Arts Gallery during the Oak Bluffs Arts District Stroll on Saturday, July 9 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Mr. Box celebrates the delicate nature of paper through sculptures that are first created in paper and ultimately cast in museum-quality bronze, stainless steel, or aluminum.

Painting With a Pro

It’s a painting party! Artists all are welcome to join esteemed acrylics painter Debra Bretton Robinson as she paints en plein air (outdoors, from life) on North Water street in Edgartown across from the lighthouse next week, July 11 to 15, 9 a.m. to noon.

It’s BYOP (bring your own box of paints) but this can be a spectator sport too —the public is invited to join her by painting with her or by simply viewing the process as she paints.
