Throughout their lives, they have been labeled with various syndromes and conditions. They experience the world in a way that is different from the bulk of society and from each other. But this Saturday, March 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Vineyard Haven Baptist Church parish house, they will all share one label: they are artists.

How and why does an artist make the move from representational to abstract art? For recent washashore MarieLouise Rouff, it was about making friends with a machine.

Art Exhibition

Marianne Neill will be showing her recent gouache paintings at the Chilmark Library for three weeks beginning May 22 through June 11. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 22 from 3 to 5 p.m. All are welcome. The show can also be viewed during regular library hours: Monday 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

This Saturday marks the fifth annual Art Stroll in the ever-expanding arts district in Oak Bluffs. The evening promises to be as eclectic as the tenants of the district, with traditional seascapes displayed adjacent to steampunk mechanical dinosaurs. The diversity of work represents the growing vocabulary of art on the Vineyard, which has found its fullest expression in this bohemian corner tucked away on Dukes County avenue.

Three artists will open exhibits at the Field Gallery with a reception open to the public on Sunday, June 20 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Pilot John Levinson said the first time he took painter Kara Taylor up in his single-engine Mooney Acclaim she didn’t say a word. “She was transfixed,” he says of her response to viewing the Island’s contours at 1,200 feet.

Double Visions

A two-person art exhibition, featuring the work of Wendy Weldon and James Langlois, is at the Chilmark Public Library from March 31 to April 29. An opening reception will be held at the library from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 3. Ms. Weldon’s half of the show demonstrates the progression within her process, from informal sketches and studies on paper to large-scale acrylic paintings. Her work presents an unusual energy, fueled by her thoughtful use of color.

When most people think of the Yard in Chilmark, an arts colony full of modern dancers comes to mind. Perhaps a touch of bohemia, too, with artists living and working on the grounds off Middle Road, running around barefoot with grace and poise. The Yard is all of those things, but at the fifth anniversary gala tonight, artists are out to prove it’s much more.

Opera singers, musicians, actors, performance artists and, yes, dancers will fill the barn theatre to showcase their talents in the fifth celebration of the opening of the Yard Arts Festival.

Mr. Brigish’s Journey to the East

In 2008, South African-born documentary photographer and West Tisbury resident Alan Brigish set out on a journey that would become Breathing in the Buddha, a recently-published book that serves as an image-driven chronicle of everyday Buddhist life across Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Laos. This Saturday, May 29, Mr. Brigish will share some of the experiences he had along the way, illustrated with photographs and video clips, at the West Tisbury library at 4 p.m. The talk is free.

Textiles Trunk Show

Renowned textile designer John Robshaw will be at Midnight Farm in Vineyard Haven from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 10. The store on Walter Cromwell Lane, behind Stop and Shop, hosts a trunk show of his natural fabrics all day, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and all are welcome to meet the designer or just stop by to see his latest work.
