Cheri Christensen’s No Country for Old Cows sits on a wall in Eisenhauer Gallery in Edgartown. True to the name, it’s a painting of cattle. But the artist’s use of light, a faint yellow outline around her subjects, gives the cows an aura of majesty, as if rays of the setting sun chose only to fall on them.

European With Vineyard Touch Shows at Eisenhauer

This past winter Eisenhauer Gallery owner Elizabeth Eisenhauer and Kaitlyn Ruitenberg went to Brussels, Belgium to visit French artist Michel Brosseau; in Mr. Brosseau’s studio they felt as if they had entered a 19th century European atelier. Canvases are everywhere, filled with colored buoys and sailboat linens bright as if sunlight were pouring out from the canvases. Long drapes hang on tall sunny windows that fill the studio with a warm yellow glow while the murmur of Brussels traffic comes through an open window.

Dorothy Burnham Collages are at Featherstone

Featherstone Center for the Arts announces the opening of a retrospective of the work of Dorothy Burnham, an artist who flourished both in New York and on the Vineyard.

Ms. Burnham began her artistic career in oil and acrylic with some watercolor. In the 1980s she became intrigued with collage and continues to work in that medium today. This retrospective of her work is primarily examples of her collage efforts and includes work inspired by her travels to Mali, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Kenya and Nigeria.

Peg Thayer Paintings At Chilmark Library

Island artist Peg Thayer opens an exhibition of her recent paintings at the Chilmark Library on Saturday, March 1, with a reception from 3 to 5 p.m.

The show continues during library hours through March 27.

Peggy Thayer has been a practicing painter for more than 30 years, working in a variety of media including acrylics, watercolors, pastels and oils. Her recent landscapes portray her intuitive relationship with nature.

Featherstone: Favorite Artists Photograph Favorite Scenes

Featherstone is hosting a show featuring the work of Vineyard photographers.

The new show is titled Favorite Vineyard Scenes, so the shots are friendly and familiar. All of the artists have previously shown at Featherstone, but this is an opportunity to preview their most recent images.

Twenty-eight artists were invited. Participants include Frayda Galvin, Alison Shaw, Chris Baer, David Welch, Harvey Beth, Louisa Gould, Kathy Rose and Robert Schellhammer.
