Marion Helen Cardoza, 102, of Oak Bluffs, died on May 1 surrounded by loved ones. She was just shy of her 103rd birthday.

Marion had a warmth about her that made everyone feel welcome and valued. Her presence always brought a smile to those around her, with a heart of gold and an extended hand. Her kindness and generosity left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to have known her. There was something truly special about her, a combination of strength, resilience and compassion. After all, she did make it to 103 years old.

She was loyal and attentive and had a deep and caring love for her partner of 55 years, Lillian Anderson whom she referred to as Lilly. A quote from Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist best describes Marion’s love for Lilly: “I love you because the entire universe conspired to help me find you.”

Marion had a diverse career history, working at Dottie’s Cafe as a waitress, Bergeron’s Garage as a mechanic, the Steamship Authority as a food service attendant, Oak Bluffs Police Department as a special officer for women in need, town of Oak Bluffs as a meter maid, PA Club as a bartender, Lilian’s Creations as a store manager, housekeeping for the RMV, MVRHS as a school bus driver and an Oak Bluffs School crossing guard.

She is survived by her wife/companion of 55 years, Lillian Anderson and her stepdaughter, Dolores Borza. She is predeceased by her godson/stepson Donald Anderson, sisters Adeline Pachico and Virginia Pachico, and brothers Walter and Nelson Cardoza.

A wake will be held on Friday, May 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Chapman, Cole and Gleason in Oak Bluffs. The church service and funeral will take place at St Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m., followed by a procession to Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs, across from the Library. A celebration of Marion’s life will be held at VFW from 1 to 4 p.m.

She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
