Micah Monroe Moffett died peacefully on March 18 at the Medical Center of Aurora, Colo. after a long battle with illness. He was surrounded by his soulmate Kimberley Martinez and his end of life doula Vanessa. He was 50.

He was born on October 20, 1972 on Martha’s Vineyard to Maggie Moffett. He was the only grandson of George M. Moffett and June Duprez, actress. He idolized his grandmother June and was often told that he had her exotic eyes and high cheekbones. He told everyone that his grandmother June was the lead in the 1940 film The Thief of Bagdad. His grandfather George was an accomplished sailor, photographer and conservationist. The Moffett race, which runs every year out of Vineyard Haven, is named after him. George purchased Felix Neck in 1962 and donated 200 acres to the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

Micah would also tell people that the movie Jaws was filmed on Martha’s Vineyard and his mother was mentioned a scene when Matt Hooper, played by Richard Dreyfuss, declares, “Mary Ellen Moffett, she broke my heart.”

He attended the Edgartown School and had a memorable babysitter named Trudy Taylor, mother of the musician James Taylor. Micah loved James Taylor and saw many of his concerts. Trudy stayed present in his life and sent him care packages after Micah moved to Colorado. He was touched by Trudy’s compassion.

He moved to Colorado in August 1991. Soon after his 19th birthday, he was severely injured on his motorcycle in Boulder. He was not expected to survive but overcame and was left a quadriplegic with a traumatic brain injury. Being disabled did not stop him from living life to the fullest and making the best of every day.

In 2004 Micah was an early recipient of a Colorado medical marijuana license. He was featured in an article published by the Colorado Freedom Report, titled Meeting a Medical Marijuana User. He could talk hours about the advantages of medical marijuana.

He loved being everyone’s friend, telling inappropriate jokes, eating surf and turf at Chophouse & Brewery in Denver, tattoos, Boston sports teams and comedy and action-adventure movies. Even after being injured, he still loved motorcycles. He loved music and going to concerts, and he saw many of his favorite performers including Tom Petty, James Taylor, Pearl Jam, Blues Traveler, Billy Joel, Guns and Roses and Aerosmith.

He had the most loving heart and was a cat with nine lives with the biggest will to live. He fought very hard through every infection that came his way and wanted nothing more than to be loved and to give love. He constantly told his soulmate Kim that she was his angel and expressed his gratitude that she had moved to Colorado to advocate for him over the last seven years.

Micah is survived by his soulmate Kimberley Martinez of Colorado, aunt Sarah Moffett of London, Ralph and Rita Greenberg of Ipswich, Marty Milner of Tallahassee, Fla. and dear friend Cindy Logan of Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather George M. Moffett, grandmother June Duprez, mother Maggie Moffett and uncle Lawrence M. Moffett.
