Ernest L. Daman of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Edgartown and Mashpee, died on Feb. 25 with his wife Gail by his side. He was 99.

He was born in Hanover, Germany, as the son of Fritz and Ruth Dammann and the brother of Ellen, now all deceased. His family moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil where he went to the American school. He attended boarding school at Hof Oberkirch in Kaltbrunn, Switzerland, and also attended Friends Academy on Long Island in New York.

Ernie went to college at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, now New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering, and graduated with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific and received the Bronze Star.

His first job out of college was with Foster Wheeler Corp. He eventually became senior vice president and remained with the company until his retirement, except for two years working in the White House during the Clinton administration, where he was the first state-federal technology executive in the office of science and technology. He was also the president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

He spoke English, German, French and Portuguese. For many years, he and his family owned a home in Edgartown. He taught himself to sail and every free moment sailed the waters of Martha’s Vineyard on his boat, Therapy. He was an inveterate golfer which he took up in his 70s, and was a former member of Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs, which he considered his second home. He also was a fierce tennis player and skier.

Ernie is survived by his loving wife Gail; his children Diane and her husband Mike, Cyndee and her husband Gary, and daughter in law Cindy, who was married to his son Bruce (now deceased); grandchildren Ryan, Molly and her husband Tim, Lindsey, Tyler and his wife Katelyn, and Lauren and her husband James; great-grandchildren Ryder, Madison and Lily; and his dear nephews Thomas and Pedro.
