David Alan Coggins, 92

David Alan Coggins died Oct. 5 after a period of declining health. He was 92.

He was born in Pittsfield on August 12, 1929 to Wallace and Alice Coggins, who were originally from Maine. He was about 10 years old when his family moved to Martha’s Vineyard. His family owned and operated the Ben Franklin store there for many years.

He attended Suffolk University and Bentley College, majoring in accounting. Dave was a military veteran who served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars and later worked at the Coast Guard Supply Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., until his retirement in 1989. In 1991, he moved with his wife and son to Wells, Me.

Dave loved his family, his country and was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by his wife Mary; son Jeffrey Alan Coggins; his remaining in laws, and many nieces and nephews. He had five siblings, Benjamin, Robert, Dana, Beverly and Barbara, all who predeceased him.

Interment will be on Martha’s Vineyard at a later date.

I have vivid memories of David being my little league coach when I was 8 years old. He was a nice man and somewhat shy. He chose me to be on the team thinking I was my brother Hollis. Hollis was also on the team. He is alive in my memory and heart. My best wishes to his family. He will be missed.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. Dave loved sports and played whenever he got the chance. He was always a kid at heart. Whenever he and his brother Ben got together, it didn't take more than a few minutes before they began talking about sports. He knew so much, it's a wonder that he didn't make it a career. We will be bringing him back to the Island next spring for burial with the rest of his family. All any of us want is to be remembered in a good way by someone. He would have liked hearing that you did.

I had the extreme pleasure to have served with Dave on Governor's Island, NY I remember Dave being highly dedicated "Coastie" and devoted to Family and Nation! I noted his passing in the "Taps" section of the CG Retiree Newsletter. I extend my condolences to you and your family for your loss!
