John Calvin Hayes of Edgartown died Jan. 24 at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was at peace, surrounded by his loving family. He was 77.

John was born, along with his identical twin brother George, on Oct. 9, 1943. They were raised alongside their sister Diane in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y, where he eventually met Patricia Korves. John and Patricia were married on Feb. 5, 1972, setting the stage for the rest of his life. They went on to have four children, raising them in Chatham, N.J, and eventually Edgartown, where he and Patricia have lived since 1998.

John pursued a career in banking, working as an executive for Barclays Internationational in New York and London for 28 years. He then went on to finish his career as an executive consultant with the Management Consulting Group (formerly Alexander Proudfoot) for 14 years.

Ever curious, John traveled internationally for the majority of his working life, seeing much of the world beyond the confines of the East Coast. In 1977, John, Patricia and their young family vacationed on Martha’s Vineyard for the very first time, beginning a love affair with the Island that continues to this day.

Among a long list of interests and accomplishments, the nearest and paramount was an unmoving passion and deep love for his family. Throughout his wide-ranging life, he always held them as the central touchstone for which all else was in service. In his final years, John relished any opportunity to play golf with his sons at the Edgartown Golf Club, walk into town to get ice cream and candy with his grandchildren, or

have innumerable dinners and parties with his family and any friends they brought in tow — all were welcome, and all were equal in his eyes, and at his door. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia; daughters Jacqueline Moody and her husband Clint of Chesapeake, Va., Kelly Hayes and her husband Ashish of Edgartown; sons Sean Hayes and his wife Jessica of Bethesda, Md., Brendan Hayes and his wife Kerry of Jersey City, N.J.; his sister Diane Magrino and her husband Frank of Boynton Beach, Fla.; and eight grandchildren, Caroline, Jack, Maeve, Norah, Quinn, Liam, Reily and Connor.

A private ceremony will be held for immediate family on Feb. 6 at the New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown. The family will hold a celebration in memory of John later this year.
