John J. Klingensmith, the founder of Jon’s Taxi of Edgartown, died at home in Edgartown on August 3, 2018 after a long battle with cancer.

Father, brother, uncle, army veteran and husband of 50 years to his loving wife Rita, who predeceased him in 2016, John was many things to many people. Whatever he decided to do he would jump in 100 per cent and give it his all. Martial arts, photography, guns, stamp and coin collecting and baseball cards were all passions for him. Many knew him as the joker, sometimes telling the same ones over and over again.

He was best known for his business, Jon’s Taxi, which he started in the early 1970s and ran for nearly 40 years.

He is survived by his sons, John Jr. and Mark, and five grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 22, at 10 a.m. at the New Westside Edgartown Cemetery, where John will once again be reunited with his beloved wife Rita.

Donations in John’s memory can be made to Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 1748 Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
