Judith Ballou Freeman died peacefully on Nov. 2. She was 86.

Born in Providence, R.I, she was a daughter of the late Frederick A. Ballou Jr. and Caroline Capwell Ballou, sister of the late Frederick R. (Tod) Ballou and twin sister of Caroline (Cay) Ballou Eden, who survives her. She attended The Wheeler School and was a graduate of Emma Willard School and Vassar College.

She called Weston, then New London, Conn., home for many years, spent a lifetime of summers at her family home on Eel Pond in Edgartown and returned to Rhode Island some 15 years ago.

Known for her wit, candor and honesty, but foremost for her love of family and friends, she will be lovingly missed.

She is survived by her son, Peter (Ham) Freeman, of Barrington, R.I., and three stepdaughters, Cricket Kennedy of Westwood, Melissa Bell of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Sarah Jaffurs of St. Croix, USVI; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren who knew her as J.J.

A private family funeral service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation — online at www.sheriffsmeadow.org/support-us/donate-online/ or by phone at 508-693-5207.
