Jean (Rodman) St. Germain died Tuesday, May 1 at home. She was born Jan. 23, 1920, in Manchester, Conn., daughter of the late Winifred (Perkins) and Ralph F. Rodman. When she was eight, her mother died and she moved to New Bedford to live with her grandmother and beloved aunts, Florence and Edith Rodman, until her marriage to the late Raymond St. Germain. Jean, Ray and children moved to their present home in Padanaram in 1948.

An accomplished pianist, she gave a concert of classical composers at the age of 16. She continued playing her grand piano into her 90’s.

Jean graduated from New Bedford High School where she was on the honor society and class secretary. Upon receiving a BA degree, with highest honors, from Barrington College in 1971, she taught in New Bedford and Fairhaven. An outstanding first grade teacher at the Oxford School, she retired at the age of 70. A letter of commendation was sent to the Fairhaven superintendent of schools regarding her excellence in teaching music and having the class present musical plays for their parents.

She was a member of the Massachusetts and National Teachers Associations, AARP, Stonewall Acres Association in Chilmark, Anthony Beach Association and Grace Episcopal Church.

Jean loved the outdoors, especially the summers with the aunts and then her own children, at the house on Rose Meadows in Chilmark. She walked the beach and swam in the ocean there until she was 88. She enjoyed reading, knitting, sailing and had done tole painting and antique refinishing.

Jean was a devoted mother to Polly Skiff Killion and husband Jack of Rhode Island and Betsey White of Padanaram. Also surviving is her sister Joan Rodman Reed of So. Dartmouth, two grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and nieces, nephews and cousins.
