Ingrid V. Brown of Edgartown died at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on April 12 after a brief illness. She was 98.

She was born Ingrid A. Vincent in 1913 to Peter M. Vincent and Edith Swanson Vincent. After the death of her parents, she and her brother, the late Edward W. Vincent Sr., were raised by their aunt, Harriet S. Worth, in the Captain Thomas Milton House on South Water street.

She graduated from Framingham State College in 1935 and worked at Island schools early in her teaching career. She was married to Harry E. Brown, a bank executive, for over 50 years.

The family moved to Dedham in the 1940s but continued to summer on the Island. After raising her children, Mrs. Brown taught at the Oakdale School in Dedham until 1978.

In retirement the couple divided their time between Dedham and their country house in New Hampshire and traveled extensively in Europe. She was a lifelong member of the Federated Church and was active in the League of Women Voters and the Dedham Area Framingham Club. Mrs. Brown returned to Edgartown to be closer to her family following the death of her husband in 1994. She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen B. Malmquist and her husband Carl, and Deborah B. Thomas and her husband Laurance, both of Edgartown. She will also be missed by her grandchildren, Andrew Thomas of Arlington, Va., Karen Malmquist Laakso of Dover, N.H., Eric Malmquist of Lynn, Ethan Thomas of Vineyard Haven and Lauren Thomas Florio of Edgartown, as well as her five great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be private. Donations in her memory may be made to the Friends of the Edgartown Library, P.O. Box 5249, Edgartown, MA 02539 or the Federated Church, P.O. Box 249, Edgartown, MA 02539.
