Robert E. Scott of Oak Bluffs, died at Windemere on March 3, 2011. He was 84 years old. Born in West Tisbury in 1926, he was the son of the late Elizabeth and Frank Scott.

Robert Scott, also widely known as “Scotty,” was born and raised on Martha’s Vineyard and attended the Oak Bluffs School until he was drafted into the army as a senior in high school in 1943. Mr. Scott finally received his high school diploma in a special ceremony at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in 2000. He served with distinction in Germany until being honorably discharged in 1947 having earned a Bronze Star for his service.

Upon returning home to the Vineyard, Mr. Scott spent a few years pursuing technical licenses in radio and television. In 1953, Robert married the love of his life, Mildred Scott, and settled in Oak Bluffs. He began working as a radio and TV repairman at Island Technical Service in 1954 and worked at that company until 1973. At that time, he started his own successful TV, radio and antenna sales and service business, Scotty’s TV, with his son, Thomas Scott. He retired from that business in the early 2000s.

Robert lived a full and active life and was a devoted and caring family man who was deeply loved by his wife, children and grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman and a voracious reader. Mr. Scott was also a pillar of the community and took a number of service positions during his long life. Robert was the Scoutmaster for the Oak Bluffs Boy Scouts, Troop 93, during the 1970s. He served as a finance committee member for the board of selectmen in Oak Bluffs for a significant period of time. He was also extremely proud of his service as the Commander of VFW Post 9261 for a period of five years during the 1990s. However, Robert was most proud of his role as a dedicated husband, father and grandfather for which he will gratefully and lovingly be remembered by his surviving family.

Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Mildred Scott; his children, Michael, Thomas and Sally Scott; his daughter in law Debby Scott; and three grandchildren, Brian, Christopher and Timmy Scott. He was predeceased by his sister, Helene Andrews, and his two brothers, Raymond and Frank Scott.

In recognition and celebration of Robert’s life, his family will gather for a potluck celebration on Saturday, March 12 from noon to 3 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Oak Bluffs. All are welcome.
