Mary Ann M. (Virgulak) Hartigan of West Tisbury died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. She was 81.

She was born one of three children to Steven and Mary (Suhoza) Virgulak in S. Norwalk, Ct., on Jan. 9, 1930. She graduated from Norwalk High School in 1947. Mary Ann married David F. Hartigan in 1951 and lived in Westport, Ct. She worked at the Westport Public Library in technical services for more than 10 years. She was a parishioner of the Assumption Church.

In 1986 the couple moved to Martha’s Vineyard after vacationing here since 1975. Mary Ann was a home health aide with Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.

She was an avid reader, crossword puzzle addict and an animal and especially bird lover.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, David F. Hartigan of West Tisbury; her two daughters, Marianne (Cookie) Yordon and her husband Matthew of Norwalk and Patricia Hartigan of Inverness, Fla.; her son, David Hartigan 3rd and his wife Kim of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Molly Yordon, Walker Hartigan, Alex Hartigan and Alora Hartigan; her brother, William Virgulak of Norwalk and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Diane Hartigan, and her brother, Steven Virgulak.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 9 a.m. in the Assumption Church in Westport, Ct.
