Doris Mae Billings, beloved wife of the late Raymond Billings Jr., both of Vineyard Haven, died on Monday, Dec. 6 in Boston after a long struggle with numerous medical problems. She was 80.

The second daughter of Joseph S. and Thomasia R. Bettencourt, who managed and subsequently owned the Burke Turkey Farm on Edgartown Road, Doris was born and raised on Martha’s Vineyard. After graduating from the Tisbury High School, she attended Bryant Secretarial School in Rhode Island. She leaves many friends and acquaintances gained during her years working in the Martha’s Vineyard National Bank and later as the bookkeeper for the Ben David Liquor Store in Oak Bluffs.

A dedicated wife, mother and friend, Doris loved to entertain friends and family in her home. She was very proud of her extensive flower and vegetable garden and spent many hours there with her beloved dog, Molly.

She was predeceased by her husband in April 2009. She is survived by her son, Michael Billings of Millis and his family, Janet O’Keefe and her two children, Kelly and P.J.; her younger sister, Marianne Ciatto of Medfield, husband Ray and daughters, Nina and Susan; and a grandnephew, Sam. She also leaves two nephews of her older sister, Hilda Davidson of California, who died in 1995: Gary Davidson of Santa Monica and Glenn Davidson of Nevada City; and her brother in law and his wife, Donald and Nancy Billings of Oak Bluffs, and their family.

Visiting hours were held on Dec. 9. A funeral service will be held in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs on Friday, Dec. 10 at 11 a.m., officiated by the Rev. Michael Nagle. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven.
