Carolyn Ball Roedel died unexpectedly shortly after her 87th birthday in Sarasota, Fla., on Nov. 1.

Born in Hartford, Conn., on Oct. 14, 1923, Teddi, as she was known by her immediate family, attended William Hall High School in West Hartford and graduated from Marjorie Webster College in Washington, D.C.

Having known Paul O. Roedel Jr. since kindergarten, she married him in June of 1945 and had three daughters. “Girls are what I wanted and girls are what I got,” she often said.

In adulthood she traveled extensively with her parents, William and Emily Ball of West Hartford and Trinity Circle in Oak Bluffs. Her mother’s family first came to the Vineyard for the Methodist Camp Meeting in the mid 1800s. Carolyn’s family spent summers there from then until the present. Carolyn and her family moved to their present home, Highland Fling, on East Chop in the 1960s.

Teddi was a docent for some of the great homes of the Island and also volunteered for several hospitals. She was also an avid golfer.

However, her full-time career was devoted to raising her three girls, and what a wild ride that was. We three have cherished her love and support for every single day of her life.

Losing her husband, Paul, shortly after 9/11 was a devastating time for all of us, but her strength helped to pull us all through.

She is survived by her three girls, Cheryl Roedel Sudderth, Sandra Roedel and Nancy Roedel Krannich, three beloved grandchildren, Sam Baker, Kyle Krannich and Taylor Krannich, three sons in law, Jerry Sudderth, Michael Baker and Gregory Krannich, her brother Robert Dabney Ball, five nieces and nephews and countless friends on the Vineyard and elsewhere.

In the early summer, she will be interred in a private service at sea off East Chop Bell Buoy Number 23. A remembrance of her life will be held at her home on the Chop. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Trustees of Reservations would be greatly appreciated.

Teddi had a very happy and secure life, spared from tragedy and sadness for the most part and was surrounded by love from everyone who knew her.

She will be greatly missed, but we know she will be around all of us for the remaining days of our lives.
