Charles (Charlie) M. Barr died surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He was the loving husband of Tina Barr for 27 years.

Charlie was born in 1936, the son of the late Kathleen and Charles M. Barr. He was a native of Nantucket and graduated from Nantucket High School in 1954.

Charlie joined the Air Force immediately after graduating from high school. He served three tours of duty in Viet Nam, receiving two Bronze Stars, with one Valor. He was also stationed in the Philippines and Guam during his time in the Air Force. He retired in 1976 from active duty while stationed at Griffiss Air Force Base after 21 and a half years in the Air Force.

He returned as a Department of Defense policeman in 1979 and was assigned to one of the law enforcement flights. In 1980, the sergeant took charge of the civilian L.E. training section and in 1981 was promoted to supervising 19 other civilians. He was responsible for the securing of all the Rome Air Development Center test facilities in the central New York area. The base closed in the early 1990s and he moved to Martha’s Vineyard with his wife, Tina.

Charlie enjoyed hunting and fishing and was on the committee for the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. He was also an active member of the Martha’s Vineyard Surfcasters, and was a member of the American Legion and VFW for many years.

Besides his wife Tina, he is survived by three children, Brenda Lino and her husband Greg of Falmouth, Melissa Rose and her husband Robert of Falmouth, and David Harvey and his wife Heather of Norwich, N.Y. He also leaves eight grandchildren, David, Sarah, Elliot and Mason Harvey, Josh and Mindy Baptiste, and Jesse and Benjamin Rose. He was a loving and involved grandpa. He also leaves his cat, Gert, whom he loved dearly.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 20 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Oak Bluffs at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Interment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne with full military honors at a later date.
