Ethel Askman Whitman, 93, of Menemsha died on Nov. 9 at her daughter’s home in Little Compton, R.I. She was born and raised on a dairy farm in Beverly, the third of five children. A graduate of Salem State College, her first job teaching was at the Menemsha School in 1939, boarding at The Homestead with Herbert and Hazel Flanders, who became lifelong friends. She married Carl Whitman in 1944 and they enjoyed 62 years together. They retired to Menemsha in 1983. She was employed as a bookkeeper at the Landmark School in Beverly Farms, and was an active volunteer at the Beverly and Martha’s Vineyard Hospitals, and Covenant Congregational and Chilmark Churches.

She was predeceased by her son, Robert, and her husband, Carl. Survivors include a son and daughter in law, Eric Whitman and Joyce Collins of West Tisbury; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Terence Tierney of Little Compton, R.I.; Norma Whitman of Monroe, Me., widow of her son, Robert; six grandchildren and four great-grandsons. She will be sadly missed by her family and her many, many friends of all ages.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Chilmark Community Church.
