David Whittemore of Vineyard Haven died Oct. 2 at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Hyannis on August 14, 1923, and was graduated from the Falmouth High School. He moved to Martha's Vineyard and became a commercial fisherman for 25 years, captaining the Rowann and the Southern Cross.

David and his wife also ran the Old Barn Antiques for many years in Vineyard Haven.

He was gifted with a wonderful musical talent for playing the piano and guitar, and played many nightclubs on the Vineyard with his jazz trio.

He was an avid yachtsman. He loved sailing and spent all his summers and falls on the water throughout his life.

David is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Angelina Whittemore; three daughters, Joan Whittemore of Plymouth, Margaret Plisinski and her husband, Paul, of North Andover and Dolores Lord of Wilmington; 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church on Main street in Falmouth on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery on Gifford street in Falmouth.
