Richard L. Stannard, 70, of Wilbraham and Martha's Vineyard, died on August 25 from complications of emphysema at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

He was born in Springfield on May 24, 1935, the son of the late Walter and Helen (Brass) Stannard. He was graduated from Wilbraham Academy in 1953 and attended American International College before serving in the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharged in March 1962. He was employed by Kelco Metals in Boston and then moved to Westfield and in 1977 moved to Wilbraham. He was instrumental in running the family business, Stannard Financial Graphics, for many years. He retired in 1998 from Westfield Coatings Corp. as vice president of finance and treasurer, having worked there for more than 20 years.

Dick was a member of the Glendale United Methodist Church and served as treasurer and also was very involved in the Springfield Kiwanis, serving as president in 1976. He also enjoyed the Indian Guides and the Springfield Power Squadron. His family and boating were his two main passions. His greatest joy was being out on his boat with family and friends.

Dick is survived by his wife of 28 years, Janet (Getchell) Stannard and their children, Susan S. Merrick and husband Carl of Vero Beach, Fl., Richard L. Stannard and wife Alison of Colorado Springs, Colo., Cherie A. Stannard of Charleston, S.C., Linda DuBois of Springfield, Cheryl Boylan and husband Michael of Chester, Charlene Morse and husband Lewis of Wilbraham and Eric Gardell of Hampden; grandchildren Chase Stannard and Haylee Keating of Colorado Springs. Colo., Nathan and Ethan DuBois and Kristal Collins of Springfield, Keith, Sarah and Gregory Boylan of Chester and Charles Morse of Wilbraham. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Riedinger, her daughter Dawn Freeman and husband Craig and their daughter Charlotte all of Beaufort, S.C., and several other nieces and nephews. Dick's passing will leave a gap in the hearts and lives of all his family and friends.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Glendale United Methodist Church in Wilbraham. Private interment took place on Martha's Vineyard.
