Philip Willoughby, 52, Was Island Truck Driver

Philip Willoughby of Falmouth and formerly of Vineyard Haven died Sunday, Oct. 2, in the Royal Nursing Center in Falmouth after a long battle with cancer. He was the widower of Margaret Ann (Madeiros) Willoughby, who died in January 2003.

Philip was born on March 3, 1953, in Oak Bluffs, the son of Douglas G. and Marilyn A. (Twite) Willoughby. He attended Island schools and was graduated from the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School in 1971.

He was a truck driver for Island Food Products for 15 years until his illness forced him into retirement.

He then lived in Yarmouth for a few years and was self-employed in the insulation business before returning to the Vineyard to work for his brother, Paul Willoughby, as a mason.

Philip was a social member of the VFW in Oak Bluffs, where he was an active volunteer. He was also a member of the Holy Ghost Association and belonged to the Dart League.

Philip enjoyed fishing and won the Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby in 1996 with a catch of a false albacore. He traveled to Ireland with his best friend, Francis Garvey, whom he worked with for many years at Island Food Products.

He is survived by his brothers, Paul Willoughby of Edgartown and Leo Willoughby of Edgartown; his three sons, Jaime Willoughby and Brian Willoughby, both of Florida, and Jonathan Madeiros of Falmouth; a daughter, Danielle Willoughby of Georgia; and several grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be held in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service starting at 10 o'clock.

Interment will follow in the New Westside Cemetery and a collation will immediately follow at the VFW building on Towanicut avenue in Oak Bluffs.

Donations may be made in Philip's memory to Allegiance Hospice, P.O. Box 752, Sagamore, MA 02561. Visit www.ccgfuneralhome.com for online guest book and information.
