Dr. Meredith Wilkinson Green of Cottage street in Edgartown and Winchester, Va., died Thursday, Sept. 29, at her Winchester home. She was 83 years old.

She was born in La Cross, Va., on May 11, 1922, the daughter of Dr. William Wingfield Wilkinson and Bertie A. East Wilkinson. In 1946 she married Dr. Robert C. Green Jr. of Winchester, by whom she was predeceased.

She was graduated from Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Va., in 1943 and was made an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa. She obtained her master's and doctorate degrees from Columbia University in New York. She worked at the psychiatric clinic of the Medical College of Virginia from 1946 to 1947 and at the Mayo Clinic from 1949 to 1951. In 1956 she moved with her husband to Winchester, where she raised her family and began a private practice of clinical psychology that continued until 2004.

Mrs. Green was the first executive officer of the Virginia Psychological Association, and over the years served as treasurer, secretary and editor of the newsletter of the Virginia Academy of Clinical Psychology. In 1989 the Virginia Psychological Association honored her as the outstanding psychologist.

She served on the first board of the Handley Library, appointed by the City of Winchester, from 1960 to 1983. She was a member of the Salvation Army board. She was an avid sportswoman, playing tennis and golf throughout her life, and was a passionate world traveler.

She is survived by two sons, Wilke Green and Bob Green, along with his wife, Sally, and grandchildren Nathan, Courtney and Lachlan.

A graveside service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester with the Rev. Douglas McCaleb of Christ Episcopal Church officiating. A reception was held immediately afterward at the Green home at 703 South Washington street.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Green's name to the Winchester Salvation Army.
