Mary Elizabeth DeSilva Loved Time with Family

Mary Elizabeth DeSilva of Oak Bluffs died Saturday, June 18, in Boston. She was 89. She was married to Antonio DeSilva, who predeceased her.

Mary was born in Oak Bluffs on New Year's Day, 1916, to Joseph and Antonia (Gomes Camacho) Castro. She moved to Mt. Vernon, N.Y., in 1935. She worked for Leslie Henry and Company as a porcelain decorative plate inspector. She retired at the age of 82 with more than 20 years of service to the company. Mary moved back to Martha's Vineyard in 1999 to live with her son, Robert, who predeceased her in April of 2003. Mary enjoyed spending time with her family, walking and was an avid reader.

Mary is survived by her granddaughter, Shona C. DeSilva, and her husband, Lee Bartolotta, and one great-granddaughter, Sophia C. Bartolotta, all of California; her sister, Evangeline Castro of Oak Bluffs; daughter in law June DeSilva of California; her cousin, Virginia Maciel of Vineyard Haven, and several other nieces, nephews and cousins. She was the sister of the late Beatrice Westover, Amelia Faria and Laura Castro.

A graveside service for Mary will be held on Friday, June 24, at 2 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Cemetery on Vineyard avenue in Oak Bluffs. Donations in Mary's memory may be made to Windemere Nursing Facility Patient Activities Fund, P.O. Box 1747, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557. Arrangements are under the care of Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in Oak Bluffs.
