Mary Jewell Willoughby Was a Native of Kansas

Mary Jewell Willoughby died August 28 at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox, following a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 25, 1912, on her grandparents' farm near Junction City, Kansas, daughter of Lieut. Col. Charles H. Jewell and Anna Oesterhaus Jewell. She was graduated from Junction City High School in 1930 and from Cornell University in 1934. She married Everett S. Willoughby of Edgartown in October 1934.

She moved to Kimball Farms Retirement Community in Lenox in 1991 from Albany, N.Y., where she lived for 26 years.

At her death she was a member of the Peace Party Chapter of the DAR. In Albany she was active in many organizations, including the DAR, American Association of University Women, Cornell Club, University Club, Albany Institute of History and Art and several historical organizations. Her hobbies included gardening, painting, genealogy, antiquing and travel abroad. She managed her grandparents' farm in Kansas until she was 89 years old.

Her husband predeceased her in 1984.

She leaves her son, David E. Willoughby, and his wife, Janet, of Edgartown; her daughter, Elizabeth Fitzsimmons, and her husband, Rick, of Shoreham, Vt.; her grandson, Seth Fitzsimmons, of Cambridge, and a niece and nephew.

Interment will be in the Edgartown Cemetery. Her family will hold a memorial service in Edgartown later in the fall.
