Howard E. MacDuff Jr. Was Avid Golfer, Reader

Howard E. (Howie) MacDuff Jr., age 71, husband of Catherine "Cathy" (Reid) MacDuff for 49 years, of Longboat Key, Fla., Swansboro, N.C., and Oak Bluffs, died unexpectedly on Friday, July 30, while visiting friends in Salem.

Born in Providence, R.I., the son of the late Howard E. and Hazel (Hardy) MacDuff Jr., he was raised and educated in Providence and was graduated from Hope High School in Providence. He entered the United States Marine Corps and served for two years aboard the aircraft carrier Layte. He was then stationed in Japan until his discharge.

Mr. MacDuff continued his education, graduating from the University of Rhode Island in the Class of 1958. He then began a career in the insurance industry for many years and retired from industrial sales in 1994. Following his retirement, he and his wife would summer in Oak Bluffs, spend the fall in Swansboro, N.C., and winter in Longboat Key, Fla.

Mr. MacDuff was an accomplished athlete, having played high and college hockey as a defenseman. His passion for hockey continued as a father, coaching his children both in youth hockey and as a coach at Rockville High School in Rockville, Conn. An avid golfer and insatiable reader, he was a member of the East Chop Yacht Club and the East Chop Beach Club. He also enjoyed boating and fishing, but most of all he was dedicated to his family and children.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children Steven MacDuff of Oak Bluffs, Pamela Campe and her husband, Geoffrey Campe, D.M.D, of Dorset, Vt., and Reid MacDuff of Oak Bluffs, and two grandchildren, Skye and Jeremy MacDuff of Oak Bluffs.
