Ann Zeeman Benders Was Born in Indonesia

Ann Charlotte Louise Zeeman Benders, 85, of Terrace Harbor, Parkersburg, W.Va., died Wednesday, July 14, surrounded by her family, at the home of her daughter on Martha's Vineyard.

She was born in Garoet, Indonesia, daughter of Jan Zeeman and Hermance Tijll. She was graduated from the Art Academy in Den Haag, the Netherlands. During World War II she used her art talents in the Dutch Underground. After the war, she and her husband served in the British Army over the Rhine as translators. She then lived in Indonesia prior to coming to the United States in 1957. She became an American citizen.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, Frans van Zijll Benders. She is survived by her son and wife, Frans and Jan Benders of Morgantown, W.Va.; her daughter and husband, Elisabeth and Robin Hyde of West Tisbury; her brother and wife, Jan and Jeanette Zeeman of Delft, The Netherlands, and six grandchildren, Frans Nicolaas Benders and Gwynedd Smith of Chapel Hill, N.C., Stuart Benders and Katherine Benders of Morgantown, Johannah and J.D. Cage of Worcester, Miriam and Tommy Keen of Marshfield and Whitney Hyde of West Tisbury.

Following cremation, a private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Martha's Vineyard Inc., P.O. Box 2549, Oak Bluffs, MA, 02557. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
