Robert Nicholas Davy Was Officer in Marines

Capt. Robert Nicholas Davy of Hubert, N.C., died unexpectedly on April 26 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C. He was 31.

He was born Jan. 22, 1973 in Norwalk, Conn., the son of Nicholas Davy and Kate Darlington Davy.

He was raised in Wilton, Conn., and was graduated from Wilton High School. He went on to gunnery prep school in Washington, Conn., St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y., and then Bentley College in Waltham.

He had previously summered on the Island and lived here permanently in 1991. He worked for Stage Coach Taxi, the Atlantic Connection, Season's Pub and the Rare Duck.

He enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps through Officer's Candidate School at Quantico, Va., and subsequently belonged to the unit that was the second to enter into Iraq.

He was stationed in Camp Pendleton, Calif., for his first assignment as platoon commander. He joined the Marine Combat Battalion, School of Infantry and served as executive and commanding officer of India Company, as well as the officer in charge of the Instructor Group. In December 2002, Captain Davy was transferred to Camp Lejeune, N.C., as they readied for war. He then deployed with the 3rd Battalion, 2d Marines as the Headquarters and Service Company Commanding Officer in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served during the hostilities and was redeployed back to the United States, where he was assigned as match executive officer for Weapons Training Battalion in support of the Eastern Division and Marine Corps Shooting Matches.

He enjoyed hockey, lacrosse, motorcycles and one of his accomplishments was riding his bicycle across America.

He is survived by his mother, Kate Davy of Edgartown, his father, Nicholas Davy, and his wife, Madeline, of New York; a sister, Kirstin Davy-Gruffydd and her husband, Stephen, of Edgartown; a nephew, Rowan C. Gruffydd of Edgartown. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Robert and Jean Darlington.

His graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, in the New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown, officiated by his Marine unit's chaplain with full military honors by the U.S. Marine Corps and the Martha's Vineyard Veterans.
