Mabel Brooker, 79, Was Vineyard Haven Resident

Mabel Carlson Brooker of Vineyard Haven died Monday, August 11, at her home.

She was born May 13, 1924 with her twin brother, Carl A. Carlson, in New Britain, Conn., to Carl Oscar Carlson and Edith Swanson Carlson. She attended schools in New Britain and was graduated from high school in 1942. She also attended Moody Business School in New Britain and found employment with the Aetna Insurance Co. of Hartford, Conn. She and Horace A. Brooker were married in 1946 and moved to the Vineyard in 1949, where her husband held positions at the Martha's Vineyard National Bank and Mrs. Brooker later joined the staff of Island Insurance Co. of Dixon Renear and Joseph Kraetzer, working there for 27 years. She was a charter member of the Martha's Vineyard League of Women Voters and served a term as the organization's second treasurer.

She was predeceased by her brother, Carl A. Carlson. She is survived by her husband, Horace A. Brooker; brother Robert H. Carlson and his wife, Fay; sister Nancy C. Mitchell of Hilton Head; daughters Nancy B. Blankenship and husband Richard, Betsy Brooker and husband Arthur Conway, sister in law Jane Glidden and her husband, Richard; grandchildren Meredith Gallo and husband Brian, Beth Blankenship, Scott Boyd and Heather Boyd.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The family suggests donations to Hospice of Martha's Vineyard Inc., P.O. Box 2549, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557. Arrangements are by the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
