Roger N. Heywood Was Chappaquiddick Resident

Roger N. Heywood of Chappaquiddick died peacefully on July 19 at home after a brief illness. Born in Holyoke in 1916, a son of the late Dr. Nathaniel J. and Alice G. (Rogers) Heywood, Roger grew up in Williamsett and attended Williston Academy. He worked 41 years for TRW before retiring to Chappaquiddick in 1985.

He and his family lived on the Reynolds estate in Wellesley until 1948 and then moved to Duxbury for many years. He was a volunteer firefighter and a member of the Pembroke Firefighter's Association. A summer resident of Chappy since 1940, Roger and his late wife, Carroll B. Cobb, restored the "Chappy School House" on Cape Pogue Bay, which was the center of sailing, fishing, clambakes and activities of the Marshall, Cobb and Wasey clans.

Roger was a self-taught man and accomplished several restoration projects including the schoolhouse, an old MG, Herreshoff sailing boat and most recently a John Deere tractor. He loved playing golf and was a lifetime member of the I.B.W.S. (Island Ball Watchers Society) and the R.C.Y.C. (Royal Chappaquiddick Yacht Club). A good friend and neighbor to many, Roger was a devotee of simple and quieter times; a good Chappy day involved clamming and conversation on the schoolhouse patio listening to opera, jazz and music of the 1940s and 1950s.

He is survived by his children, Anne of Chappaquiddick, Barton of California and Bradford of Chicago, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, at the schoolhouse on Chappy at a time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Trustees of Reservations (Cape Pogue Wildlife Refuge), 572 Essex street, Beverly, MA 01915. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
