Jack Lucas (Luke) Carlson and Kristen Anne Grabarz were married Sept. 15, 2023 at the groom’s family home on Peaked Hill in Chilmark in a romantic ceremony during swirling winds ahead of Hurricane Lee.

The bride is the daughter of Wendy Grabarz and Robert Grabarz of Shelton, Conn. The groom is the son of Catha Whidden Day-Carlson and David K. Carlson of Chilmark and New York City.

Jessica Blackwell Carlson, the groom’s sister, officiated, and the bride’s brother Stephen Grabarz was a groomsman. Scott Carlson, the groom’s brother, was best man and Claire Cohen was maid of honor.

The wedding ceremony was moved forward a day due to the imminent storm. The cellist arrived just in time to play the bride across the lawn and the bride’s veil flew off in a gust, rescued by a gallant groomsman.

An Island band led lively dancing indoors at the last-minute venue switch to the Chilmark Community Center. Guests recalled square-dancing in the same space 32 years earlier at the wedding of the groom’s parents.

The groom is a descendant of Henry Blackwell and his wife, suffragist Lucy Stone, who began summering in Chilmark in 1864 after Henry rowed into Squibnocket Landing. Luke’s grandparents were Barbara Blackwell Whidden Day (dec.) and The Rev. Robert C. Day (dec.) former active West Tisbury residents, among numerous relatives.

The bride and groom graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where they met as first years. Kristen earned her master’s from Harvard in Data Science and works as a data scientist for Amazon. Luke earned his master’s in CS/Engineering at University of Pennsylvania and is a machine learning engineer at Apple.
