Mocha Motts in Vineyard Haven is hosting an art exhibit by Jack Ryan during the month of March.

Mr. Ryan is a master of the pointillist technique of stippling, using a pen to draw dots that create shapes and contrasts of shadow and light. If that sounds vague, it’s not. Those untold amount of dots add up to cityscapes, locomotives, bridges — all majestic and full of life, which makes it all the more mesmerizing to imagine the process of creation.

By day Mr. Ryan works at the West Tisbury post office, a master of patience and a quick smile. By night that patience is also on display as he hovers over the page, each piece taking approximately 50 hours to create.

“I do it every night,” he said in a 2018 interview with the Gazette. “I come home from work, have something to eat, and am in the basement drawing. It’s calming.”

Mr. Ryan was born in Brooklyn, which much of his work continues to evoke. He moved to the Vineyard in 1986.

“It’s like I’m doing a crossword puzzle,” he said of his process. “If I get frustrated I take a break and come back to it. It doesn’t feel like I’m exercising any type of patience at all. It’s the only way I could get something like this done. I’d mess up the whole process if I tried to rush.”

Mocha Motts opens at 6 a.m. Have a cup and be transported by Mr. Ryan’s artwork.
