Low income Island residents and families may be eligible for assistance paying their heating bill, through the Massachusetts Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

Applications for the program, which applies to households making up to 60 per cent of the state’s medium income level, opened Nov. 1 and will remain open through April 30. Applications may be submitted online at toapply.org/MassLIHEAP or in person at the South Shore Community Action Council office at 133 Falmouth Road, Mashpee.

If accepted into the program, funding assistance can apply retroactively to bills from the beginning of November,  said SSCAC energy programs director Denise Tetreault

The level of assistance is awarded based on income level and federal funding, Ms. Tetreault said, and last year’s benefit level went up to $2,300.
