The West Tisbury and Tisbury fire departments have signed an agreement to share costs for a potential new fire hydrant on Lambert’s Cove Road.

West Tisbury’s town select board approved the agreement presented by West Tisbury fire chief Gregory Pachico at their Oct. 4 meeting, also giving Mr. Pachico permission to apply for a grant to fund the hydrant, along with another on Tiah’s Cove Road owned by West Tisbury.

Tisbury’ select board approved the agreement at a previous meeting.

The hydrants, Mr. Pachico said, are one aspect of the Dukes County Wildfire Protection plan, developed by local planners and the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.

“All six towns’ fire chiefs participated, as well as other organizations, in creating this plan and identifying hazard areas around the Island,” he said.

The grants would cover 75 per cent of costs to install the hydrants, Mr. Pachico said, each expected to come in between $120,000 and $150,000. Tisbury and West Tisbury would split the 25 per cent for their shared hydrant.

If awarded, the town’s portion of funding would be considered at the next annual town meeting.
