Meteor Shower Season

We are approaching the best time of year to watch for meteors, also known as shooting stars. We've got both mild summer nights and at least two meteor showers to look for. This weekend marks the radiant period of the Delta Aquarid meteor shower. And mid-August we've got the ever so popular Perseid Meteor Shower. There are enough meteors in both to fill the sky every night ahead.

The radiant date for the Delta Aquarids shower is Sunday morning, but you may see them any night ahead. The weekend full moon will definitely interfere with our seeing. The moon is brilliant but still some of the brightest meteors of the shower might be seen.

Looking ahead, the waning moon will be gibbous then crescent in the next two weeks. So its brightness and impact will diminish. The peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower which takes place on the weekend of Saturday, August 12 through Sunday, August 13 will be ideal. But don't wait.

If there is a clear sky night and you have sometime outside, look up. You may see a bright meteor speeding across the sky.
