Editors, Vineyard Gazette;

It has been a reliable companion and has had an unmistakable effect on me. And now, apparently, The Notebook - a weekly email-blasted essay from the editor of the Gazette, Bill Eville, for the past 10 years – is going away.

All of us seek a way to think about life. About what is important to think about — about what is important to remember and to treasure. The man who spoke to us each week from The Notebook found beauty and meaning in the smallest details of the life swirling around him. And he had the bravery to slow it all down for just a moment, reflect on what he has seen and heard, and connect it all to the greater passage of time and life.

The life and death of chickens, the life and death of childhood, the life and death of friendships — these all played out in micro-stories rich in humorous detail but never short on more profound meaning.
