Long recognized for her musical talent, Kate Taylor presents another side of her creativity to the Island this month. Ms. Taylor’s artwork, featuring 13 oil on canvas paintings, will be on display at the Chilmark branch of the Martha’s Vineyard Bank from July 14 to 26.

There will be an opening reception on July 14 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Ms. Taylor did not put brush to canvas until 2011 when a friend visiting the Island encouraged her to try plein air painting. She recalled her mother’s advice to paint what she loved.

“The Island is filled with places that I love, so there’s lots to paint,” she said.

Ms. Taylor’s first art show was in 2019. She returns post-pandemic with scenes of her favorite ocean views, Island homes and natural landscapes.

Although relatively new to painting, Ms. Taylor began her foray into visual arts in the late 1970s, crafting pendants and beads out of shells and stone. She said creating tableaus out of natural materials translated well to her painting practice.

“I was creating one or two-inch scenes for pendants, including the crucial parts,” she said. “I would put on the curves of a beach, the points of a cliff — I was creating something out of nothing.”

Tips from artist friends through the years allowed Ms. Taylor to develop her eye — and love — for painting, which she hopes comes through to visitors of her show.

“It’s one of the best feelings in the world,” she said.
