On Saturday, June 10, Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation will launch Treasure on the Trails: The Eben Horton Glass Floats Project with Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks. This treasure hunt offers a family-friendly opportunity to explore while searching for hand-crafted glass floats tucked away on conservation properties across the Island.

Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation staff will hide clear glass floats, each numbered and bearing the foundation’s logo, on 19 of its properties. Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks in West Tisbury has crafted 100 floats for the project; 25 will be hidden at a time at intervals throughout the year.

The project evokes a local tradition from times past when fishermen used glass floats in their fishing nets and occasionally one or two would wash ashore for a lucky beachcomber to find.

Sheriff’s Meadow asks that each explorer or group take only one float. Found floats can be registered on the activities page of the foundation’s website. All who register their finds will be entered in a drawing for a special prize from the glassworks.

Clues about the locations of each float will be posted on the free TrailsMV mobile app, available for free at the App Store and Google Play. More information is available on the Instagram and Facebook pages for Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation and TrailsMV, and also by contacting Catherine Hall at hall@sheriffsmeadow.org or 508-693-5207.
